In 1912 theTrieste Town Council after an increase in the school age population, brought into being a new school institute that began on the 5th of November 1912 with the name of "Ginnasio superiore Comunale Francesco Petrarca".
In
1922 the school became part of the Italian State system under its present name : "Liceo ginnasio Francesco Petrarca".
From
1964 it has been at its present address of via Rossetti 74; Since then it has undergone significant expansion, especially when in the eighties, it created the first experimental course of study in Trieste based on the study of Languages.
Today there are altogether 35 classes (13 in the Classic High School and 22 in the Language High school).
Such a strong increase in the school population has made it necessary to divide the school into two locations:

In the Main school of Via Rossetti 74 there are:
- Classes of the three year upper High School (Classical and Language sections)
- Head Teacher's Office
- Didactic and and Administrative Offices
- Gymnasium
- Main school library
- School bar
- Computer laboratory
- Multimedia room
- Chemistry and Physics laboratory

The school building is surrounded by a garden and a sports area.
The school is easily reached by bus numbers 11 and 22 that stop in via Rossetti in front of the school

At the location of the school branch at Largo Sonnino 3 there are the classes of the two year lower High school (classical and language sections).
The building is in the town center and is easy to reach by the many buses that go up and down Viale D'Annunzio (18, 20, 21, 23, 34, 40, 41...)
The branch building is also equipped with a gymnasium, computer laboratory, language laboratory, physics laboratory , multimedia rooms and a dedicated library...
